A typical electrospinning machine includes an emitter connected to a high-voltage power supply, a collector, which is either earthed or connected to a negative high-voltage power supply, and a solution feeding system such as a syringe pump.  The solution, which usually contains a polymer or protein dissolved in a solvent, along with any other functional additives, is supplied to the emitter and becomes highly charged. Control of the electrostatic field between the emitter and the collector allows for the formation of a jet of solution, which travels from the emitter towards the collector. As the charged jet travels through the electrostatic field within the electrospinning machine chamber it either becomes stretched into fibers (electrospinning) or atomized into droplets (electrospraying) depending on the properties of the solution. Evaporation of the solvent during the spinning or spraying process means that the nanofibres or nanoparticles are collected dry, in the form of a non-woven fiber mat or a powder.
